The 75 homes in today’s Shaw’s Bounty neighborhood sit on land that General Oglethorpe granted to John Shaw in the mid-1700s. The developers of the property said in their 1980s brochure that the land grant was probably in reward for Shaw’s faithful service in the famous Battle of Bloody Marsh 280 years ago on July 7, 1742.
The entrance to Shaw’s Bounty and its eastern boundary is Frederica Road. The four roads inside Shaw’s Bounty—Settlers, Five Pounds, John Shaw and Jacobs—are named in honor of the property’s history. All end in cul-de-sacs at the edge of the marsh forming the western boundary. The tidal creek flows through the marsh, then in and out of the Five Pounds Road pond. Wildlife abounds there as well as at the freshwater pond between Jacobs and Settlers. Residents have preserved the land’s natural beauty with its live oaks, sweetgum trees, and pines. The active, 45-year-old Shaw’s Bounty Home Owners Association (SBHOA) deserves credit for this success.
The purpose of the SBHOA is to continue to preserve the neighborhood’s natural beauty by supporting the scope and restrictions of the subdivision’s covenants, thus promoting the general welfare and improving the appearance and value of all property in the community.
